For March's newsletter, we dig deep into what cost users pay to have AI voice control. (Mini spoiler: it's your data.)
We also go over being Matter certified, a reminder to save the date for the State of the Open Home, and more!
Catch it all

We have a new partner in our Works with Home Assistant program - Motionblinds!
We've partnered with them to certify smart window blinds and bring us closer to a smart home built exclusively with certified devices.

This ESP32 board will be controlling the low-voltage blinds in the apartment. Happy that the normal AC switches work as contacts. (Not sure why I doubted they would).
Trying to get #HomeAssistant voice working has been one of these “take a mouse to the movies” adventures in #homeautomation
I had to upgrade HA to the latest version. That broke some AppDaemon integration that drives the touch screen displays on my light switches. Weather entities now use the WebSocket interface, not the REST API. So my light switches were blank in their default idle screen mode.
Naturally, the light switch project isn’t maintained any longer, so nobody is available to make a major change like that. So no more weather forecast on the light switch. Instead I show a bunch of sensor values.
It shows current state of the garage door (little pentagon house looking icon), forecast temperature (left thermometer), actual temperature (right thermometer), humidity, precipitation, swimming pool temperature, and current electric consumption (icons on the bottom row)
My home assistant setup is no less than 8 different docker containers in an HoC architecture (house of cards ) Just like Christmas lights “if one goes out, they ALL go out!”

Super excited to have a smart ceiling fan installed this afternoon. Can’t wait to get it all set up with @homeassistant!

So this arrived today. Gonna try to get rid of my #Alexa from #Amazon by switching to #HomeAssistant’s voice assistant. My HA setup is a docker container hand made and it’s about 5 years old. Always feels a little fragile so I don’t update it often. The onboarding out of the box didn’t work. So I think I have to upgrade the container.
They also want my iPhone app to have Bluetooth permissions. That’s fine. But it doesn’t have them. I looked in the security settings and I haven’t denied it. It’s not listed under Bluetooth at all. I think that means the app hasn’t requested permissions yet. I don’t know how to make it ask. #homeautomation
Fixed this thing too many times. Opened it up… looked inside… closed it again.

Good excuse to finally get a smart dryer!
Which one to get? Samsung, Bosch, Siemens, Miele… or?
User: Hey, is there a home automation device that'll do this specific thing that I want?
Other Users: Oh yeah, there's things like this on Amazon *sends link* or you can get this on AliExpress *sends link* but the latter may take more fudging to get it work, although I--
*loud crashing sound in the distance, followed by more clattering before the door is SLAMMED open by a frantic nerd carrying a pile of breadboards*
Home Assistant User: HAVE YOU HEARD OF ESPHOME???
I just wrote a blogpost about the system that I've designed to optimise our power consumption so that we can do everything with a 25 A main fuse.
There are an increasing number of networked devices switching things on and off at the best time to consume the cheapest and most abundant electricity.

I just got my ID.Buzz connected to #homeassistant :

How did you spend you Sunday?
Okay, we're gonna be yeeting our Echo devices shortly. What're good alternatives? We're a mixed household -- my partner is Android, I'm iOS -- and we have a home assistant installation kicking around, including integration with Hue
I'm leaning towards homepods, but I'm open to other options. #homelab #HomeAutomation
While looking for new hardware for our home server (a 19'' mini rack server is very tempting...), I just came across project #minirack
10" rack server builds using a mix of off-the-shelf commercial and #diy #3dprinted mounts, panels, frontplates etc.
Looks interesting (and the mini racks are also rather cute).
Maybe interesting to some of you.

I never worried about my #Alexa before. But now that they’ll be always on and streaming to Amazon, I’ve ordered one of these to try with #HomeAssistant.
I get so much use out of shopping lists and timers, in addition to #homeautomation. I hope there are ways to get that functionality.

Welp. Time to look into the open source opportunities for voice assistants to hook up to #HomeAssistant. #HomeAutomation #SmartHome

I asked Google Translate what it would sound like to take their suggestion. Something tells me that even people who speak Chinese, are not likely to say all of this just to use the device. #alexa #homeautomation
