Trying to get #HomeAssistant voice working has been one of these “take a mouse to the movies” adventures in #homeautomation

I had to upgrade HA to the latest version. That broke some AppDaemon integration that drives the touch screen displays on my light switches. Weather entities now use the WebSocket interface, not the REST API. So my light switches were blank in their default idle screen mode.

Naturally, the light switch project isn’t maintained any longer, so nobody is available to make a major change like that. So no more weather forecast on the light switch. Instead I show a bunch of sensor values.

It shows current state of the garage door (little pentagon house looking icon), forecast temperature (left thermometer), actual temperature (right thermometer), humidity, precipitation, swimming pool temperature, and current electric consumption (icons on the bottom row)

My home assistant setup is no less than 8 different docker containers in an HoC architecture (house of cards 😜) Just like Christmas lights “if one goes out, they ALL go out!”

So this arrived today. Gonna try to get rid of my #Alexa from #Amazon by switching to #HomeAssistant’s voice assistant. My HA setup is a docker container hand made and it’s about 5 years old. Always feels a little fragile so I don’t update it often. The onboarding out of the box didn’t work. So I think I have to upgrade the container.

They also want my iPhone app to have Bluetooth permissions. That’s fine. But it doesn’t have them. I looked in the security settings and I haven’t denied it. It’s not listed under Bluetooth at all. I think that means the app hasn’t requested permissions yet. I don’t know how to make it ask. #homeautomation

There are an increasing number of networked devices switching things on and off at the best time to consume the cheapest and most abundant electricity.

ESP32C3 microcontroller board sitting on my thumb. It's really small and at the same time very powerful.
ESP32C3 connected to a relay board. This switches off the solar panels on our garage when the price is negative, or if we just have too much electricity.
One of the controllers for a heater in our home. This switches depending on time of day, cost of electricity, whether we're importing or exporting, and by how much.
Arduino and ESP32 based controller in our meterkast. This communicates with all the other controllers in our home, ensuring that we never exceed 25 A from the mains and that everything is optimised to use the cheapest electricity that we can (also the best environmentally).

Okay, we're gonna be yeeting our Echo devices shortly. What're good alternatives? We're a mixed household -- my partner is Android, I'm iOS -- and we have a home assistant installation kicking around, including integration with Hue

While looking for new hardware for our home server (a 19'' mini rack server is very tempting...), I just came across project #minirack

10" rack server builds using a mix of off-the-shelf commercial and #diy #3dprinted mounts, panels, frontplates etc.

Looks interesting (and the mini racks are also rather cute).
