:arch: XeroLinux :kdelight:Hey y'all...Sorry for not posting any updates recently. Been busy with IRL stuff. Am still hard at work on upcoming releases. While <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Gnome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Gnome</a> will just be receiving QOL changes and tweaks, the flagship <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/KDEPlasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KDEPlasma</a> edition will be moving to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> among other things. Justine SmithiesAnyone else running a <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> WM under <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wlroots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wlroots</a> and it freezes your computer to the point that nothing works not even switching TTY ? I thought it was <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=riverwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RiverWM</a> related but it happens with <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=swaywm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SwayWM</a> too. If I don't start a Wayland session my computer is fine all day. But under Wayland I'm starting to get these random freezes like twice a day and the only cure is to hold the power button. I mean I'm tempted to revert back to X11 for stability so any info or ideas would be gratefully received. Oh and I'm running <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> too.

doragasuAfter using daily sway-wm (<a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wayland</a>) for years, I went back i3-wm (<a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/xorg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#xorg</a>) for about a week, and I miss Wayland so much. For example on Firefox the scroll is so rough (even scrolling just the tab bar is awful!), while on sway was silk smooth.In case you are wondering, I am back to i3-wm because of <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/KiCAD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KiCAD</a>, that officially does not support Wayland, and I can confirm it has several nasty problems.

If it looks blunt, that's because I'm not an artist, design will come later.Right now I can switch workspaces, activate windows and control media playback. It works great for media control but not so much for virtual desktop / window management. I can use <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/wmctrl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wmctrl</a> to nativate between virtual desktops but window management doesn't work on <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wayland</a>. Then there is <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ydotool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ydotool</a> which also doesn't seem to work well.Now I can - Control media via dbus - Switch workspaces via wmctrl But I feel there has to be a better way?<a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/csharp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#csharp</a>

I totally forgot about the decorations topic, which is of course very relevant, it means even jumping through the hoop and implementing a <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wayland</a> compositor, you can only deliver part of the functionality (and almost none of the looks) of your window manager.But even with that issue solved, I would really dislike wayland's design. Although I *do* think that most of <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/X11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#X11</a> core drawing is obsolete and useless (mostly for the missing alpha channel), I think a display server should offer drawing facilities. Replace X with something dropping lots of cruft (indexed palettes, COMPOUND_TEXT, etc), instead incorporate extensions that everyone needs these days, extend <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/XRender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#XRender</a> (now as part of core) to offer more drawing primitives, etc ... you could have a replacement for X11 that's worth dealing with. And window managers could still be separate clients.
