HELL OF A SUMMER #Review

Genial enough throwback camp slasher delivers more laughs than scares.
But if you want horny teens trying to hook up but keeping their clothes on, this is an option.

I wrote about the mythology of the night dancer, one of the most evil characters from this part of the world (East Africa), but whose stories always end up in horror-comedies. When you talk about a night dancer in Uganda, people expect a good laugh.... But my short film is more #dance than horror, a revenge fantasy. Anyway, if you enjoy folk stories and mythologies and zombies have a read.

From the British Fantasy Society: fancy a bit of the grotesque to kick off your week?

M F Alfrey—known for his creepy crawlies and body horror terror novels—looks at what makes a creature truly fearsome, and how you can create your own. This article features the author’s own artwork, showing how he developed the monsters in his novel Silentium.

There's an unremarked contradiction at the heart of many horror movies where they want the family to own a cat so that it can jump-scare the audience - meeROWrrrrrssssss!

That's fine, but then they expect us to believe that this cat-owning family will get up and creep around the house fearfully in response to an unidentified noise, instead of bellowing "CAT! WHATEVER FUCKERY YOU ARE UP TO, JUST FUCKING STOP IT RIGHT NOW" and going back to sleep

Folks there now remains less than an hour until #MONSTERDON the weekly monster movie watch party! To avoid a hail of toots, consider making a filter!

If you'd like to join us, this week we're watching LASERBLAST (1977), a film which... Is bad. I'm sorry, it's just bad. Imagine your average teen movie but with a laser gun.

Anyway it's available on Tubi or over here on Archive.org: archive.org/details/laserblast

We start at 9pm Eastern! Come join the pain!

Anybody into the English writer Desmond F. Lewis (b. 1948)? I'm reading his big 2003 collection of weird very short fiction, Weirdmonger. It's astonishingly original stuff. And since each piece is so short, there is a wealth of original ideas in it. Not for pushing through in a few long sittings!
