My #bookreview is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular #horror #books far & wide.

Darkly unsettling, unique, and deeply weird, SHAKY PICTURES OF VANISHED FACES contains the horrifying, the haunting, and the wryly humourous. D. Matthew Urban has crafted an excellent, disquieting assortment of eldritch fables where nightmarish, uncanny characters and scenarios abound. (Cursed Morsels Press)

How to Rule an Empire and Get Away with It by K.J. Parker

Second in The Siege series, this has a different protagonist, and the city has been under siege for seven years. I didn’t enjoy this as quite much as I did the first book, and I find our hero, Notker, to be awfully similar to Florian, another of Parker’s protagonists from the Saevus Corax series.

Even though it was not as much fun as the first book, it’s still an enjoyable read, and I really do like all the technical warfare bits. Considering how this book ends, I really do need to find out what happens in the third and final instalment. ★★★☆☆

📚 “Love is always harder. Love means weathering blows for another’s sake and not counting them.”

👍A historical fiction set in France during the plague. It gave me Pillars of the Earth mixed with The Decameron vibes. I enjoyed following the MC’s on their journey and the character development. There were some consequences and some absolutely bonkers depictions of demons and Hell. The ending had some nice symmetry.

👎 The final boss fight was slightly anti climactic. I feel like after such a long journey, I needed more.

Rari reviews "Specimen" by C. Quince, Prism Agents book 1:

"I knew the author though Bluesky, so I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while. I loved it. It’s an extremely well written book... A sci-fi tale with a dash of spies and assassins and a lot of queer. You will love this book."

This so-called New Right has adopted the furious nostalgia of a backlash to what Milei has called a “global hegemony” while embracing radical deregulation. At Davos, Slobodian writes, “Milei spoke less as a defector from the global capitalist order than its latest photogenic cheerleader.”

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Great Robots of History by Tim Major”
★★★⯪☆

This is a lovely and twisted anthology of stories. Each presents a "historic" robot - be they an automaton, a puppet given life by the gods, or a resurrected villager. Some, like the Mechanical Turk, are historical fact but others are invented just for us to gawk at.

The stories are mostly…

Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead by K.J. Parker

Saevus Corax leads a battlefield clean-up crew and is just trying to get by, when he somehow becomes extremely embroiled in heist attempts, kidnappings, and war.

The world is complex and interesting, and though few characters are likeable, they feel real. I know Corax would be the first to disagree, but I found him to be a charming protagonist, and enjoyed both his voice, and all his machinations.

I enjoyed the vast majority of this book quite a lot, and even though I thought it faltered somewhat at the end, I still immediately started the sequel. ★★★☆☆

@WhoNeedsABlog Congratulations! Your click-bait worked with me.

I write reviews for my own benefit, and let people look at them if they want to. My blog is at rdmp.org/bookblog and my review of Hyperion is at rdmp.org/bookblog/?review=hype.

I will also say that I enjoy reading others reviews, and even reviewing the review, as a means of broadening my mind and putting my own thoughts into perspective.
