  • Nur weil etwas alle/die meisten machen wird's nicht weniger falsch!

Natürlich kannste #Signal nutzen, nur dann musste halt auch drauf klarkommen dass so zentralisierter shice durch eine christofaschistische Regierung (#USA) irgendwann eingestampft wird.

  • Davon dass es eine bescheuerte Idee ist aus gründen von #Datenschutz, einen Anbieter zu nutzen der ne #Telefonnummer verlangt mal abgesehen.

#Monocles verlangt hingegen garkeine Daten und erlaubt anonymes Bezahlen per #Monero & #CashByMail !

Und wer #monocles oder anderen Anbietern nicht vertraut kann #XMPP selbst.hosten und hat bei #OMEMO ohnehim doe Kontrolle über die Schlüssel.

Alles andere ist naiver Glauben dass @Mer__edith für Nutzer*innen Knast riskieren würde…

Like @delta & @thunderbird as well as @monocles / #monoclesChat & @gajim which work flawlessly over @torproject / #Tor using @tails / @tails_live / #Tails and @guardianproject / #Orbot respectably.

Considering the costs of even acquiring and upkeeping an #anonymous #SIM, I'd rather pay €2 p.m. for #XMPP+#OMEMO and #PGP/MIME-supported #eMail with the option of self-custody than $2,50+ p.m. just to keep a phone number.

Or is anyone here expecting @Mer__edith to risk jail for life amd not comply with #CloudAct?

It stenches like #ANØM, because NOTHING IS FOR FREE and running a #VCmoneyBurningParty is expensive...

@ity #webxdc is a shared spec and joint impelemntation with eg #cheogram and #monocles ... It has nothing to do with proton. Webxdc apps are shared in a chat and run inside the messenger. Proton does not have a messenger. Webxdc apps work on all platforms that #webxdc messengers are released for, including @deltatouch , an Ubuntu based phone. DeltaTouch runs all webxdc apps including the realtime p2p ones. @lk108 is doing an incredible job :)

Per android vedo che fanno un po tutti abbastanza pena forse si salva #monocles, come funzionano le integrazioni come chiamate video chiamate sticker ecc.. Su che server vi siete registrati e perchè? (Ho un account #disroot ma non riesco a collegarlo su altre app ho un vecchio collegameto solo su #cheogram ma se provo a fare il login su altre app non va 🤔) continua....

#XMPP enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?

My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. #Android doesn't have that as an allowable field, and #Thunderbird and #Nextcloud have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? Edit: Yes, but there's a catch: *the XMPP address must be prefixed with "xmpp:"*

So "user@foo.bar" is not an OK XMPP address, but "user@foo.bar" is.

Then to make matters worse, now there's a wish to change the labeling of "XMPP Address" to "Chat ID": gultsch.social/@daniel/1140129

It might be a long time before the address synchy-ness ever works again between Android <-> #Davx5 <-> Nextcloud <->Thunderbird

Note: Android allows a "Jabber" type for an IM address, where you *don't* prefix the address with "xmpp:".

Not only that, but @signalapp being.located in #Trumpist #USA means they gotta have to follow said laws and that means if flexed upon using #FOSTA & #SESTA or god forbid made-up claims to commit #TransGenocide and prosecute #Trans minors and/or their parents and/or medical professionals, THIS WILL BLOW UP IN THEIR FACES like a grenade used as ball gag and fuse pulled!

For comparison: @monocles doesn't demand #PII like a #PhoneNumber or anything at all and if you don't trust them either (which is fair - never trust anyone, neither Signal nor #monocles nor me!) you can not only choose from various providers but literally #SelfHost your own (even as an #OnionService on @torproject / #Tor) and thus have full control of all the comms.

@lauren I disagree as @signalapp requires a #PhoneNumber = #PII & cost barrier and they restrict access based off #PhoneNumbers.

  • Plus it's illegal in an increasing number if juristictions to gmeven attempt to acquire a phone number or SIM anonymously.

Whereas it's so easy and fast to get #TechIlliterates setup with #XMPP+#OMEMO (which uninke #Signal doesn't demand PII!) that I'd challenge you to a #speedrun with step-by-step documentation for every #TechIlliterate to follow along to setup Signal from scratch vs. me doing #XMPP+#OMEMO on @monocles @gajim.

Also #Signal being #centralized makes it as vulnerable as any other #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solution!

  • Whereas even if #monocles were to shutdown, one could easily switch over to any other provider or #SelfHosting.

I'd not count on the #Trump-Regime not flexing #CloudAct against anyone they deem undesireable!

@lauren no, because @signalapp is subject to #CloudAct (= incompatible with #GDPR & #BDSG if you ever care!) and collects #PII in the firirm of #PhoneNumbers, which are at best pseudonymous but trivial to track and at most means that people inviting others without their consent comitted an illegal disclosure if PII!

Give #XMPP+#OMEMO a shot: @monocles / #monocles & @gajim / #gajim.

#FACT: It's not real #E2EE unless you have100% #SelfCustody of all the keys!

Thus the correct way as #monoclesMail says is to use your own client and keep your keys to yourself.

Now OFC, monocles charge €2 p.m. for their starter account but they also accept #SEPA #WireTransfer, #Monero, #CashByMail, #Stripe and #PayPal for #payments, so it's pretty flexible and affordable given they don't put #ads in your #inbox or invade user privacy!

Furthermore, #monocles - and every other decent provider - won't bamboozle you with false promises they legally can't fulfill and #DigitalSnakeoil services...

Please amp up you #ITsec, #InfoEec, #OpSec and #ComSec because naively believing a corporation to not snitch on you disqualifies you at best if not put other peoples' lives in danger!
