To the left is a strip of ochre coloured plaster, and to the right exposed brick work where the ochre plaster has fallen away. The ornamented marble looks ancient, and probably is - many buildings in this area have their foundations in the 1200s - which contrasts with the much more modern plaster bits, and a thin white cable which runs horizontally along the bottom of the frame.

Colour photo, although you wouldn't know it because it is entirely in greyscale, of the searingly white sun burning through the clouds, an almost-circular blown-out patch of white just off centre of the frame. The sun's rays make pearl-grey lines across the clouds, which range in colour from smoke to charcoal. In the lower right hand corner of the image is the very top of a chimney stack, and a lamp post with an old-fashioned hanging lantern. Two seagulls soar in the sky above the sun, wings outstretched, one horizontal and one vertical, like lines of black ink.

Colour photo of the two bottom storeys of a house abutting a canal. The bottom storey has four small square windows with vertical bars across them, two either side of an arched doorway which is covered by wooden planks, the lower ones of which have been worn away by the tidal water. The upper storey has five rectangular windows, the outside four with closed brown wooden shutters, and the central one with one shutter open, revealing the warm glow of a lamp inside the room. The building has sand-coloured plaster at the top, which has fallen away below to reveal dusky red brick work which gets deeper in colour the further down the wall you go. The water in front is an intense bottle-green colour, and there are two pale blue-grey wooden mooring posts either side of the boarded-up doorway. All the colours in the picture are quite muted and cold, apart from the orangey light from the half-open window.

A clothes line is suspended across a narrow sunny Venetian street, strung with various items of laundry in muted colours. In the middle of the line hangs a Spider-Man onesie, upside down, as if Spidey was hanging on by his feet and waving his arms in the air. It looks most incongruous in every way.

Most of the photo is quite dingy in colour, the grille is dusty charcoal, the wall it is set in is stained and mottled grey and smoke coloured plaster, but there are three little spots of colour - two intrepid little bright green plants, one halfway up the left side and the other in the lower right corner of the window, and a small patch of bright terracotta brick in the upper right corner of the photo where a patch of plaster has fallen off the wall.

There is a thin bottle green cable strung along the wall, which runs along the bottom of the frame, on a slight right-rising diagonal angle, which adds a subtle counterpoint to the horizontal line of the top of the wall. There are eight little plants growing vertically up from the top of the wall with space between each of them: thin fragile little stalks in the palest green, with the occasional proto-leaf sticking out from the sides, culminating in unopened buds. Behind and above is pale blue sky with some white splashes of cloud. The image feels spring-like and hopeful, the little plants, like all of us, reaching joyfully for the sun.

On the edge of a stone pavement abutting a wide canal, there is a green-stemmed ornate metal streetlight on the right, but the frame is cropped below the actual lamps, so that it lights the scene from above but we can't see the source. Mirroring the vertical line of the streetlight, there is on the left a wooden mooring post, and in front of it two rubbish bins, with black metal frames. A discarded bright red umbrella pokes out of the rightmost bin, curved handle up, and its ruffled skirt partially open, so that the light from the street lamp shines down into it, making it glow from within. In the background, the water of the canal is green shading to black in the distance, and beyond we can see some lit up buildings on the other side.

Colour photo taken looking through the window of a florist, of some of warm pink many-petalled flowers (I'm still useless at recognising types of flowers, I can only apologise). The window is covered with raindrops, and is slightly misted up from the inside, giving a soft-focus Vaseline-on-the-lens feeling to the picture.

The bricks are very small and unevenly worn, so they look a bit like pointillist dots rather than geometric rectangles. Running down the right of the frame is a long very narrow arched window, divided into small squares by a metal grille and blocked behind so that it is solid rust-red. Along the top of the frame, a wide strip of ornamentation, which looks like a band of brown lace. A grey-brown juvenile seagull is in flight almost in the centre of the frame, and in the strong sunlight you can make out its shadow below.
