This image has remained in my mind's eye for years. I was going to write that it was the visual equivalent of an earworm, but that wouldn't be quite right, as that term suggests something annoying of which one would be glad to be rid.

He should receive the treatment of the portrait of Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice who attempted a coup d'état in 1355.

His portrait is with a black rectangle on his right with the inscription
“HIC EST LOCUS MARINI FALETRO DECAPITATI PRO CRIMINUS” (this is where Marino Faliero was beheaded for his crimes).

And yes he was beheaded.

The painting can be seen in the Grand Council Hall in the Doge’s Palace in Venice.
