Every time I see a #Ghibli AI picture, my heart dies a little. Every time an image is made, we are all impoverished a tiny bit. A small shred of respect is lost for an old man and his crew toiling months at a time on seconds of animation, to tell stories of beauty, empathy, and humanity, a man who loathed #AI from its earliest days as an affront to life itself.
Every time a cartoon facsimile is generated and used for a lark, a token bit of our common heritage is stolen, ground up, repackaged, and regurgitated like so much chewing gum, boiling gallons of water and spewing carbon to entertain someone for a moment with images as vapid and forgettable as the next.
Every time I see one of those images, I scroll past and shake my head a little.
You know, I'm never one to utter the sentence, "Art is ________," much less finish it, because art is a billion different things to a billion different ppl, but the following statement from Maria Mouschoutzi, PhD, really does speak to me.
“Art shouldn’t be driven by effectiveness; it should be driven by expression.”

“They launched this type of service and no matter who you are, it’s fun to play with,” Morris began. “You see people creating images just for the fun of it. They share it with their friends. Everyone gathers around at their desk and they all think that’s a funny way to look at this person with a nice avatar that’s been created, or a real looking person but it’s based on them, and so it’s fun.
“There’s a hype factor that gathers momentum very quickly. I had a phone conversation just last night about this and someone said, ‘Yeah, these guys are burning through GPUs doing this. Literally, they’re burning through GPUs, they’re almost catching fire.’ They’re having to run that hard to do it, and that’s taking away the capacity,” he explained.
“The same sort of models that we’re running for doing GPT and those sorts of things running on the same hardware and probably in the same cloud-based server form. So, all of a sudden now we’re putting another demand on the GPUs.”"
