Headline and text: DOGE fires government efficiency team The Trump administration terminated 90 technologists last Friday at the General Services Administration (GSA) who were working to modernize the software the federal government runs on, according to Reuters. The Atlantic reported that members of the GSA team known as 18F were informed their roles had been “abolished as part of an agency reduction-in-force.” Among the team’s achievements was an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) program that allowed taxpayers to file directly with the agency for free instead of paying for filing software from Intuit TurboTax. 18F employees were also responsible for maintaining the government’s weather alerts and forecasts service. It’s unclear if IRS Direct File or weather.gov will continue to operate.

The scale of deliberate and gleeful destruction of US state capacity on the part of the Trump administration is hard to process. As someone who writes about public service excellence it’s heartbreaking to hear so many stories of people’s careers, teams, and accomplishments being ripped apart. In my specific field of government tech, it was jaw-dropping to learn this past week that the US’s best digital government teams are being fired.

Text from article(edited for length): 18F did two things, both for agencies that hired them to help with projects: it built software and it taught agencies how to hire & oversee vendors to build software. The former raised the bar by showing agencies what “good” looks like, the latter allowed those practices to expand sustainably. ...That was literally unique, and now it’s gone... Once, I was part of a team of 4 people at 18F that saved the Dept of Defense $500 million with a single, 3-day project. 18F projects saved many millions of dollars as a matter of course, while delivering better results for Americans. Another time I was part of a two-person team... that partnered with a court... to help them build, from scratch, an open source case management system to drive the operations of the entire court. The whole thing cost them... vastly less than they’d been spending on their old system, and today their cost of operating it is a rounding error compared to their old infrastructure costs. All the work 18F did for all their agency partners was open source. Public money should produce public software, for public inspection. In short, 18F works just how Musk and team pretend that they want government to work. But when his team found it, they destroyed it. 18F’s work is evidence that government works well, which undermines their message that it doesn’t. 18F’s parent agency, the U.S. General Services Administration, turns a profit as an agency. So it has to be destroyed too.

When former Tesla engineer Thomas Shedd took the position of TTS director and met with TTS including 18F on February 3, 2025, he acknowledged that the group is the “gold standard” of civic technologists and that “you guys have been doing this far longer than I’ve been even aware that your group exists.” He repeatedly emphasized the importance of the work, and the value of the talent that the teams bring to government.

Despite that skill and knowledge, at midnight ET on March 1, the entirety of 18F received notice that our positions had been eliminated.

…Among the marquee websites that #18F employees helped build or revamp are the #IRS’s free tax filing service known as #DirectFile & the National Weather Service’s page, weather.gov.

But since #Trump returned to the Oval Office, 18F has also been targeted by #ElonMusk, the #tech #billionaire whom Trump tasked w/cutting back the government. #Musk wrote last month in a post on his social media platform, X, that “that group has been deleted.”

In an email to workers at the agency’s #Technology Transformation Services, Thomas Shedd, a fmr #Tesla engineer who is now the division’s dir, said that #18F had been identified as noncritical & would be cut.

“This decision was made with explicit direction from the top levels of leadership within both the administration & #GSA,” Shedd said in the email…. He added that while no other #TTS programs had been affected, “we anticipate more change in the future.”

Those who have read Illuminatus! will recognise the phrase "immanentize the Eschaton", and read it as "bring about the apocalypse". It is originally a theological term meaning "bring Heaven to Earth, usurping God's prerogative", made famous when conservative columnist William Buckley used it to make a case that progressive social programs were sacrilege.

"Immanentising the Eschaton" is why Trusk destroyed #18F: because in their view, only God can help, and the government should stick to ruling.
