38 Hours with the M81 Group
Over 38 hours, a garden #telescope captured the M81 #galaxy group. Dominant M81 boasts spiral arms and a bright core, while cigar-shaped M82 shows intense star formation due to their billion-year gravitational tussle. Eventually, they'll merge into one galaxy. The image also features NGC 3077 and distant integrated flux nebulae from our Milky Way.

Hubble Space Telescope image of Arp 147, also known as IC 298.
The clumpy, blue ring in the galaxy on the right likely formed when the companion galaxy to the left crashed through its center. This sent a pressure wave outward, like a ripple in a pond, compressing the right galaxy's gas and triggering the formation of new stars.

HH 49: Interstellar Jet from #Webb
James Webb's #infrared image reveals a Herbig-Haro jet (HH 49) from a forming star system, with glowing shock waves. At the jet's tip lies a distant spiral #galaxy, its blue core and circular rings visible behind the interstellar outflow.
HD image at https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap250409.html#space #astronomy #telescope #universe
This is a compressed version of the video from just under 50MB to approximately 18MB
This video takes the viewer on a journey to Herbig-Haro 49/50, an outflow from a nearby still-forming star, in high-resolution near- and mid-infrared light with the NIRCam and MIRI instruments. The intricate features of the outflow, represented in reddish-orange color, provide detailed clues about how young stars form and how their jet activity affects the environment around them. A chance alignment in this direction of the sky provides a beautiful juxtaposition of this nearby Herbig-Haro object (located within our Milky Way) with a more distant, face-on spiral galaxy in the background.

Explanation:
What's at the tip of this interstellar jet? First let's consider the jet: it is being expelled by a star system just forming and is cataloged as Herbig-Haro 49 (HH 49). The star system expelling this jet is not visible -- it is off to the lower right. The complex conical structure featured in this infrared image by the James Webb Space Telescope also includes another jet cataloged as HH 50. The fast jet particles impact the surrounding interstellar gas and form shock waves that glow prominently in infrared light -- shown here as reddish-brown ridges. This JWST image also resolved the mystery of the unusual object at HH 49's tip: it is a spiral galaxy far in the distance. The blue center is therefore not one star but many, and the surrounding circular rings are actually spiral arms.

Hubble image of Arp 283, also known as NGC 2798 and NGC 2799.
The left galaxy in this interacting pair, NGC 2799, is viewed edge-on. A bridge of star forming regions appears to connect it to its companion on the right, NGC 2798. NGC 2798 has two broad smooth spiral arms or tails without obvious clumps, made of mostly older, yellow stars.
