AI's environmental impact can be extremely localized. A Maine bill would limit the amount of electricity data centers can siphon from local power grids.

"Amazon, Microsoft and Google are operating datacentres that use vast amounts of water in some of the world’s driest areas and are building many more"
"SourceMaterial’s analysis identified 38 active datacentres owned by the big three tech firms in parts of the world already facing water scarcity, as well as 24 more under development."

IEA and EDNA released today a report assessing models on data center energy use and providing new estimates.
Global power consumption of data centers (excluding crypto)
2023 : 300-380 TWh
2030 : 600-800 TWh
AI data center power consumption
2023 : 30-50 TWh
2030 : 200-400 TWh
+ nice synthesis of previous estimates and models.

A Reuters survey of 13 major US #electric utility earnings transcripts found nearly ½ have received inquiries from #DataCenter companies for volumes of #power that would exceed their peak demand or existing generation capacity - that's everything they supply to homes & businesses - a metric that reflects the sheer size of oncoming data center needs.

Ethernet cables are classified into “CAT-N” categories (“CAT” meaning Category) based on their performance specifications, primarily bandwidth (MHz), maximum data rate (Mbps or Gbps), and transmission distance
Here are the different CAT types of Ethernet cables #datacenter

The overall scenario in China may not be that bad. The article that you shared says that:
The top end of tech in China is still investing — in 2025, phone operators plan to spend $12 billion on AI. ByteDance are spending $20 billion. Alibaba is spending $53 billion. [Light Reading; Reuters]
Chinese companies still want data centres — even buying capacity in Malaysia to serve the broader Asian market. They’re just not so interested in the cheap local ones.#DataCenter #AI #Cloud
This is the old ex E-Shelter dacatenter behind the Spandau tax office in Berlin. I complained about the waste of energy in my very first talk about energy consumption of #datacenter
Finally they made it real. The problem was the heat network to the buildings. Normally they require 85-125 C and they obviously designed a new system working with 65 C
Good work

Rebooting Petabyte Control Node
am rebooting one of the control nodes for a petabyte+ storage array, after 504 days of system uptime..
watching kernel log_level 6 debug info scroll by on the SoL terminal via iDrac..
logs scrolling, the array of SAS3 DE3-24C double-redundant SFF linked Oracle/Sun drive enclosures spin-up and begin talking to multipathd...
waiting for Zpool cache file import..
waiting.. 131 / 132 drives online across all enclosures.. hmm.. what's this now...
> transport_port_remove: removed: sas_addr(0x500c04f2cfe10620)
well ffs
> 12:0:10:0: SATA: handle(0x0017), sas_addr(0x500c04f2cfe10620), phy(32),
oh, that's a SATA drive on the system's local enclosure bay for scratch data, it's not part of the ZFS pool..
next step, not today, move control nodes to a higher performance + lower wattage pair of FreeBSD servers
