@elCelio interesting! Currently it's got 824 boosts on Mastodon, of which ~165 are bridged to Bluesky ... so that's roughly 20% adioption of #BridgyFed in this sample set, which is pretty decent for opt-in! FYI @quillmatiq @snarfed.org

Of course it's not that surprising that there are a lot more boosts and likes of Nathan's post here (where he was 3400 followers and it was boosted by several 10K+ follower accounts) than on his bridged profile (which only has 77 followers). So one way of looking at it is that bridigng only added 1% to the number of boosts and 2% fo the number of likes ... which doesn't sound like a huge impact.

On the other hand his skeet from his Bluesky account (which has 5000 folllowers) also only got 5 boosts (along with 19 likes), so another way of looking at it is that bridging doubled his Bluesky engagement!

@stedi @jjanhone @manna @samuelvasy Kyseessä on #BridgyFed, eli yhden ohjelmoijan @snarfed rakentama siltabotti @fed.brid.gy@fed.brid.gy, joka käytännössä tekee Fediversumiin siltakäyttäjiä (kuten esim. @bsky.app) ja näin välittää viestit ja reaktiot palveluiden välillä. Bluesky ei siis itsessään ole millään Fediversumi yhteensopiva ja he itse asiassa alunperin tekivät tietoisen valinnan, että tekevät oman protokollan sen sijaan että satsaavat alan standardiin (ks. https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/issues/255). Tämä todennäköisesti siksi, koska haluavat kaupallisen alustan joka on omassa kontrollissa.

Bridgyfedin haaste on se, että se on hankala ei-nörttien tajuta laittaa päälle, se vaatii nimittäin suostumuksen, eli pitää osata seurata Bridgyfediä ja käyttäjää omassa palvelussaan. Tuhansista seuraajistani vain muutama siis näkyi Mastodonin puolella. Osan Blueskyssa kommentoijien kommentteja en ikinä nähnyt, koska heidän kommentit eivät siltautuneet Mastodoniin saakka, vaikka tilini näkyikin Blueskyssa - tämä siksi koska eivät tajunneet seurata bottia.

Kömpelö toteutus, joten poistin koko botin käytöstä omalta osaltani. Harmitti vaan sen puutteet. Sillä ei tavoita ketään.

Bridgyfedin kehittäjä parhaillaan pohtii laittaisiko sillan Blueskyssa kaikille vaan päälle suoraan (ks. https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/1471), koska Bluesky ei kysele muutenkaan suostumusta keneltäkään. Mastodon-yhteisöille suostumuksellisuus on kuitenkin kynnyskysymys, joten tämä(kään) silta ei tule toimimaan, jos se ei ole valtaosalle saatavilla.

Lisäksi sillassa on muitakin hankaluuksia: Pitkät viestit pätkiintyy ja boostaukset eivät välity niiden käyttäjien osalta, jotka eivät halua sisältöään sillattavan. Kokemus on siis vajavainen.

Eli toisin sanoin: Bluesky ei ole (eikä halua olla) osa Fediversumia. Olen sanonut tämän aiemminkin ja sanon taas: Bluesky larppaa hajautusta. Heillä on oma protokolla, jolla hajautus on mahdollista, mutta 99% käyttäjistä ei tiedä siitä tai ole siitä kiinnostunut. Twitter 2.0 jo syntyessään.

If you want your posts to bridge as well, consider opting in to Bridgy Fed by following @bsky.brid.gy from the fediverse or @ap.brid.gy from your Bluesky account.

Note that Bridgy Fed doesn't support all the functionality of the different platforms. For example, it truncates longer posts, doesn't propagate edits (because Bluesky doesn't support editing), and doesn't bridge profile metadata. And, if you bridge your Mastodon account, there's no way for it to use Bluesky blocklists or subscribe to labelers. And keep in mind that Bluesky is an all-public environment optimized for surveillance capitalism -- there are already multiple datasets of Bluesky posts on Hugging Face. Bridgy Fed is careful to only bridge public posts, but it's still not for everybody.

More positively, though, kudos to BridgyFed's creator for making it opt-in -- consent FTW!

1. Public posts are public. On both Bluesky and fedi.
2. Reply and follow are explicit interactions which require execution over the network.
3. Current implementation means I (you) won't be notified of those interactions from the other network by default.
