I'm thinking about helping a #senior friend move to #Linux instead of upgrading from #Windows 10 to 11. Wondering what #security #apps I should install for them... Or any apps in general?

Is it still the case that Linux doesn't need #antivirus #software? Or if it does, what's recommended? Is it reasonable to assume I can install and configure #UFW and not worry about them calling me up asking about popups or why something's not working?

What are good set-and-forget apps/settings?

@simonzerafa I mean obviously #reuse / #UseLonger is better and if your options are "corporate surplus" or nothing then I'd never judge.

To me it's just that #ThinkPad as a brand has really died as every single Device is a #downgrade in #repairability & #upgradeability compared to my #X230Tablet:

Personally, I wish I had €.€€€.€€€ so I could just develop the #NUCbook and be done with the #Enshittification of #Laptops / #Notebooks!

Why is Microsoft so good at controversy?

"CVE-2025-21204, when successfully exploited, allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally."

Microsoft: “This folder should not be deleted regardless of whether Internet Information Services (IIS) is active on the target device. This behavior is part of changes that increase protection and does not require any action from IT admins and end users.”

Was talking to a friend about me going back to Linux after finishing the first version of my MusicBee plugin, and I'm wondering...

Windows 11 and the impending EOL of Win10 is causing a lot of people to go "I'M MOVING TO LINUX" to the smugness of the Linux fanbois. But how many of them are actually going to stick?

It's gonna be similar to the Twitter exodus - people were like "I'M SWITCHING TO MASTODON/BLUESKY" and then leaving. (Bluesky a bit stickier than Mastodon due to it being similar to Twitter, helped by the fact a lot of people seemingly tried fedi and hated the experience)

I can see the less techy dropping Linux immediately soon after tbh. Linux desktop devs and community really need to watch for those people, and listen to/empathise with what they're complaining about.

Windows 10 will no longer receive free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after 14.10.2025.

Also, Mitarbeiter schulen.

#Windows Logo Achsooo.

I've been using Windows 11 with privacy and security enhancements that make Windows significantly less enshittified, and I have to say it's been a hell of a lot more tolerable to use.

I don't really use or need most of the services that phone home to Microsoft. No OneDrive, no Microsoft account login, no telemetry. Just a normal local user account like the olden days.

I also use VSCodium instead of Microsoft VSCode. My settings are synced to my Nextcloud instance with a local sync extension.

I can use emacs-pgtk in WSL2 with tolerable performance. I can have systemd enabled in WSL2 so that I can run various services, including the Tailscale daemon, which makes the WSL2 instance accessible on my Headscale network.

I feel like one of the great eyes in the sky has been blocked out. Blocky DNS proxy and adblocker + unbound recursive resolver is doing other blocking and privacy work.

This...this is an optimal user experience for me. Or, as optimal as a user experience can get on Windows 11, anyway.
