Saint John's University Abbey Stained Glass Window Collegeville Minnesota During my visit as part of the 2017 Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener in St. Cloud, I had the privilege of exploring the remarkable Saint John's University Abbey, a masterpiece of modern architecture and spiritual symbolism. Designed by the renowned architect Marcel Breuer, this Benedictine abbey stands as a striking example of mid-century modern design, blending geometric boldness with sacred tradition. One of the most awe-inspiring features of the abbey is its massive stained glass window, an intricate composition of color and light that dominates the façade. The honeycomb-like pattern of glass panels floods the interior with a radiant glow, transforming the worship space into an ever-changing canvas of spiritual reflection. Each pane is carefully arranged to evoke themes of faith, community, and divine presence, embodying the Benedictine values that define Saint John's University. A famous #StainedGlass window, at #StGilesCathedral in #Edinburgh.

The window tells the story of the 1570 assassination of the Earl of Moray, who had the ignoble honor of being the first politician to be assassinated by a gun.

The top panel shows him getting shot by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh (a man who was angry that his family had been evicted from their home by Moray). Hamilton later escaped safely to France, and members of Moray's political enemies (kin to #MaryQueenOfScots ) were tried and convicted of taking part in the conspiracy.

The bottom panel shows his funeral, officiated by Rev. John Knox (who made an exception to his Protestant Reformationist beliefs in order to speak at the funeral).

The crowd is composed of a large number of well-dressed noble men (there are no women) packed tightly in the room. All are standing, except a scant few men in the front of the images, who are kneeling and weeping with grief.
