Today in Labor History April 12, 1924: Curtis Turner was born on this day in Floyd, Va. Turner, along with Fireball Roberts and Tim Flock, tried to organize the NASCAR drivers into a union in 1961 (the Federation of Professional Athletes). Their goals were bigger purses, a share in broadcasting rights, and retirement benefits for the drivers. NASCAR founder Bill France Sr banned all the union drivers. Eventually, every union driver except for Turner and Flock, quit the union so they could race again. Turner sued to be reinstated, but lost his lawsuit. The court said he was an individual contractor, not an employee of NASCAR or any track. But he was reinstated four years later.

As a racer, he won 360 races, including 22 in the NASCAR Convertible Division in 1956, alone, as well as 17 in the NASCAR Grand National Series. He got his start in driving as a bootlegger for the illegal whiskey his dad made. He never got caught running booze. However, he almost got caught with a 500 lb bag of stolen sugar (for making alcohol) in the days after WWII when sugar was still being rationed. However, after fighting a gun battle with the law, he managed to successfully evade a dragnet, as he drove 300 miles on backroads to get back home, where the cops were waiting for him. Then, during his trial, he convinced the jury that the sugar was for making apple butter. The judge sentenced him to $1,000 and a 2-year suspended sentence.

Butterbean Queen might just be a superstar in #NASCAR when a couple years ago it looked like he might be stuck with being a pro late model guy. He's done an incredibly good job tonight after winning at Daytona, and later in the year he's going to be hard to beat as a former CARS champion on the short tracks. He could probably be in Trucks already, but he was smart to take a year to learn heavier, faster cars and bigger tracks in #ARCA

I've never understood the appeal of putting on the previous year's race, it is going to confuse a lot of dim people who don't know what's going on as it always does and the true fans like don't need a refresher on what happened a year ago, we watched it.

If you're going to make us rewatch races, at least play like a classic #90s or 2000s 500 or something, there's plenty in the archives to educate new fans and delight the every week-ers.

Y'all...Im going to admit my redneck roots here. I grew up racing before girls were allowed on the track. My stepdad built nascar engines. When I was 14, I got a 1964 Mustang, in pieces, and he told me when I could put it together, I could have it. Well, I did, and I waited for him to be at a race, and I took it to his shop and swapped out the little stock six cylinder with a 351 Windsor V8, dual holleys, some 10/11 gears and a five shifter....goddamn that car was too fast for a 15 year old to own. (And I had to work for another race team for a while to pay for the engine I appropriated.)

I tell you that story, to tell you this one. I quit watching #NASCAR years ago, because it sucks now. But...for the first time since the 1970s, they are racing at Bowman Grey tonight. It will either be amazing, or a demolition derby. My poor Beloved is trying to figure out how to get an antenna to work, so I can watch the race. Bless him. :blobcathearthug: Vrooom!
