And I was fortunately enough to have a good many brilliant professors. If only they shared what they understood openly, wow. RichardI do not think *individual <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#humanities</a> work needs to stop with the removal of grants. Yes, clearly communities and community culture will be hurt. However, individuals can continue privately, to best of their ability, and budget, share openly in the spirit of <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/openAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#openAccess</a> and the common good. We are called to be stewards of public knowledge, whether we get credit for it not. Now* more than ever.

That kind of organisation is very low on the outcome parameter *research per money* in the Humanities. I don't need time on the Webb telescope, or a lab of my own, or three PhD students, or a technician to get a paper into Praehistorische Zeitschrift.<a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#academia</a>

In natural <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#science</a>, this is unproblematic because you can't really produce top-level research without big grants.In the <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Humanities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Humanities</a> however, you can. So the system of incentives is counterproductive here. The fastest way to get top-level publications out of a humanities scholar is not to make her compete for big grants.
