Frank’s Guide to Listening to Ham Radio Comms

Squashed a bug or two and added a useful (to me) feature to KC8JCLogger. Exciting stuff!
Thanks to @F4LUB for the eagle eye on some things that happen when you do your own code reviews!
W7O and W7L will be on the air this afternoon, on SSB and FT8 respectively! Come join us to celebrate #vaccines! #sciencerules #PolioOnTheAir #hamradio
I was in the shack and was notified that @N4JAW was on, but regrettably couldn't hear him. I did hear some peeps sending "CQ MST" — had to look that up, but it's what I would have thought it was. (I do SST regularly.)
Cranked-up the keyer WPM to 20, and logged one right at the end of the hour. But yeah, 20 WPM is a stretch for me.
DL8MIK and me launched a balloon with two radiosondes on Saturday. Report (de and en) and pictures:
Highlights from #hamradio field ops at the shoreside park today included a 5 year old girl asking her mother excitedly about the radio with lots of TOTALE MUNDO! exclaimed back and forth (“can it reach to Milano? Istanbul? YES?! YES!")
More on my recent #HamRadio rant. I got banned from a forum thread because I challenged what the #ARRL is doing to bring in the next diverse generation of licensees. I was told that the league has great resources available.
The great resources? Example: There is an upcoming event in which old guys will be asking young Girl Scouts for their name, address, and phone number so that they can send NTS messages (with that information shared on-air by each handler in the path) to the girls parents as a demonstration of how interesting #HamRadio might be to young girls.
First, this is creepy. Second, NTS messages? RLY?
Receptions still going strong from #iss 04/13/2025 1415 UTC #SSTV image received by N4JAW 10 degrees over EM78 Louisville, KY. USA. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

Wow I just had my first FM satellite QSO on SO-50 and it was with @wd9ewk ! And he was at Canyon de Chelley National Monument US-0908. Thanks, Patrick!
Right after that I had a QSO w/W5QZ in TX.
I need to figure out how best to record audio from these sessions as the GD-77 does not have a recorder. I'll use my phone recorder next time, which will make logging a lot easier.
Fun!
just remoted in to my home radio while at an emcomm #hamradio meeting using tailscale…
I want there to be some sort of xbox style achievement notification to pop up IRL when I do something this nerdy.

@ARISS_Intl I just now received these two images on the 13:30 UTC (4/12/2025 09:30 EDT) pass. Looks like it's working just fine.
#hamradio operator astronauts on the ISS are transmitting a series of slow-scan TV images honouring human spaceflight. Received with an ordinary VHF/UHF amateur radio transceiver and free MMSSTV software. Just a simple vertical antenna.
While everyone else on the highway was headed to some coach fella place, I took Friday off and activated the never before activated remote summit W6/SD-494 aka “2992”. The desert is HOT during the day so I set off super early and got back to the van before the real heat set in. 10 contacts in the log. #sota #hamradio
