@kuketzblog Dieses Beispiel zeigt sehr deutlich, dass die Möglichkeit, mehrere Accounts in einem Messenger einzurichten, auch ein Sicherheitsmerkmal ist. #deltachat erlaubt eine unbegrenzte Anzahl an Profilen (Accounts) pro Gerät. Jedes Profil verfügt über eine völlig unabhängige Kontaktliste. Die hätten zum Beispiel ein Profil für Pressekontakte und eines für Regierungsmitglieder verwenden können. So wäre es wohl nicht zu dieser peinlichen Panne gekommen.
We are testing #deltachat with 8 users since Friday with a self hosted server.
The experience is excellent and people are happy, especially with secondary device setup.
So far we ran into a few small issues.
- one user had pushes on one device delayed (its push. Remember apples guarantees on delivery…)
- a gif didn’t post but only the first frame (iOS)
- taking a photo doesn’t add it to the message, using the gallery works (Android)
Gerade mal getestet:
Ich kann von meiner regulären E-Mail-Adresse (TLS-verschlüsselt) an meine DeltaChat-Mail-Adresse schreiben.
DeltaChat zeigt die Mail als "Chatmail" an, kein Problem.
Aber DeltaChat verweigert die ausgehende Mail, weil sie an den Empfänger nicht PGP-verschlüsselt werden kann.
So stellt DeltaChat sicher, dass die (ausgehende) Kommunikation darüber tatsächlich nur E2E-verschlüsselt möglich ist.
Das muss halt beachtet werden, wenn eins die eigene E-Mail-Adresse für die Nutzung mit DeltaChat verwenden möchte.
Ansosnten bietet DeltaChat ja aber nach der Installation die Möglichkeit, sich eine automatisiert generierte, verschlüsstelte System-Mail-Adresse einzurichten.
Und schon kann verschlüsselt kommuniziert werden :)

I've been trying #deltachat with #chatmail and normal #imap server the last few days (since my last messages). One thing I miss is a device management feature. For example, in case a device gets lost, I would like to be able to remove access. Afaik this is still not supported, correct? In that case, what would be the best way to discuss this as a feature proposal?

Bietet ähnlichen Funktionsumfang wie #Whatsapp #Signal #SignalApp und nutzt dafür aber Standard Internet Protokolle (Email Standards) für #E2EE über sog. chat relays. Diese speichern nur kurzfristig die (immer verschlüsselten) Nachrichten.

@Thomas1108 we hear you. Changing messengers is serious work. There is no need to rush if you just moved to signal. It's a fine choice. For the time being, it would be suicidal for the US corporate operators of signal's infrastructure to use their power to compromise it. They could loose tens of billions of revenue with customers outside the US if they did. Maybe just consider #deltachat your insurance and a thing to eye mid/long term. Email will not go away anytime soon :)
@delta @fasnix @Gerbsen @qbi Du weißt das, ich weiß das, alle #DeltaChat Nutzenden wissen das … mein Zitat war die übliche Antwort darauf, wenn man jemandem diese App vorschlägt.
Es ist immer das Problem einer kritischen Masse. Und Influencer:innen können an der Promo für DeltaChat nichts verdienen, also lässt sich diese App / dieses System nicht zu einer kritischen Masse pushen.
Zum Glück ist DeltaChat für alle Platformen verfügbar und nicht wie #Briar nur einer kleinen Gruppe zugänglich.
Delta.chat seems pretty neat and one of the few times PGP is implemented in a user friendly way.
I very much appreciate that it builds on top of email.
Lack of push for self hosted servers is a bit of an inconvenience, I’ll have to look into running my own with push proxy I assume? #deltachat
I said it before on Mastodon. I'm reposting this again. Comparing #DeltaChat and #Matrix together, if you want hassle free and consistent messenger for private #E2EE chats, don't go for Matrix. DeltaChat is way better.
However, if you want something like a public forum, or a public chatroom, don't go for DeltaChat. Matrix is way better suited for that. And DeltaChat does not support public groups at all. In DeltaChat groups, there is no admin or moderator and everyone have got permission to remove or add the others.
I think I have to write a longer post on my personal blog about these two, comparing them together.

Inderdaad naast privacy is beschikbaarheid ook een belangrijk punt en dat is bij signal met zijn centrale US hosters geen goed voorbeeld.
#Matrix bestaat niet bekend om zijn zuinige servergebruik. #deltachat en #xmpp zijn dat wel. Bij grote groepen chatgebruikers ook een belangrijk punt. Ik denk niet dat de meeste gebruikers zullen willen gaan betalen voor chat diensten.

A lot of people talking about #DeltaChat, but I’m not convinced yet.
@symcasolari a thing that has lot of potential for convincing people is the in-chat mini-apps of #DeltaChat which Signal doesn't have, with them you can have shared to-do lists, shopping lists, split bills (I am using it right now to split expenses with a friend while traveling and it is super cool), mini-games, collaborative editor, polls, etc. There is much more than just chatting and could replace dependency on several centralized services, also kids can use it without SIM cards
