Miroslav Kravec<p>Do you know any fully open low-power mesh network standard for home-automation?</p><p>I'm seeking an alternative to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a>, <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ZWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZWave</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Thread" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Thread</span></a>/#Matter, that is royalty-free and doesn't require any membership, certifications, nor any other fees.</p>
Matt Knight<p>Any recommendations for local-only IoT devices (Z-Wave, Zigbee, or a device I can flash with ESPHome) suitable for switching a relatively large, inductive 120V AC load?</p><p>Specifically, it's a septic pump that draws about 15A while running, but spikes up as high as 40A when it first starts. Makes me a little nervous to run it via a Sonoff POW or similar which would have been my go-to otherwise.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/selfhosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosted</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/homeassistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeassistant</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/esphome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>esphome</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/zwave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zwave</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/esp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>esp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/pump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pump</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/motor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>motor</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.knight.fyi/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a></p>
Paul<p><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/homeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeAssistant</span></a> shenanigans continues. I had to cut in a deeper box due to the size of these <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/zooz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zooz</span></a> switches, and ended up just going with a 3 gang due to all the other wires that came into the box (2 separate outlet runs also exit here).<br>I mostly like these switches, but I’m not crazy about the little delay that’s caused by the switch waiting to detect a double-tap, and I’m not finding a way to disable it. It’s a shame, ‘cause both <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/zwave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zwave</span></a> and WiFi coms are really snappy. <br>I will die mad about the aluminum wire in this house (and hopefully not -From- it!). Fortunately I’ve seen Noalox on any re-work, and I’m being super diligent about using it as well.<br>I know there’s mixed feelings about <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/wago" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wago</span></a> connectors for line voltage. I’m going to keep an eye on them, but they were a lot easier than wire nuts, as specially since I didn’t have a lot of slack to work with. <br>There was no way I could have crammed all this into a 2 gang box, and I’m glad I didn’t try.</p>
Ety, Ringer of Bells ^G<p>Before I go old testament on this <a href="https://hive.institute/tags/ecobee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ecobee</span></a> for dropping their API access, are there any known workarounds for integrating it with <a href="https://hive.institute/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> without relying on <a href="https://hive.institute/tags/HomeKit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeKit</span></a> ?</p><p>I have a basic stat that supports <a href="https://hive.institute/tags/ZWave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZWave</span></a>, but would lose out on the remote probes feature which sadly I'm pretty invested in.</p><p>Hmm, maybe someone has written a system to replicate the ecobee's remote probes features within HA using generic temperature sensors?</p><p>Grateful for any suggestions.</p>

Put the dongle on an extension cable and place it at least 2m away from the rPi, especially if you have a plastic case<br>2. Start pairing with the closest mains-powered device and work your way outward<br>3. Only after all mains devices are in the mesh do you add battery ones. Add them where you're going to use them, not near the coordinator.</p>
